Explanation of Works

I created these illustrations in the early 1980s as a gift for my late mentor, a professor of eighteenth-century literature. The works are shown here at approximately full size, about 3"x4." Each collage is mounted on a hand-cut border that mimics the border of a postage stamp. The border is a permanent part of the collage. One larger collage completed the set: "The Adventures of Tom Jones" is not shown ~ the scan is terribly over-exposed and would require many hours of retouching.

As to the quality of the images, my only record of the art is on slides, which scan poorly. For that reason, all of the collages were touched up in order to make them visible on-line ~ two, extensively: "Rape of the Lock" and "Tam O'Shanter." In fact, "Rape of the Lock," as shown here, is practically redone from scratch. I have tried to make the collages look as close to the originals as possible.

Other collages done during the same period are: "Otis Jones' World-Famous Stamp-Burger," "Stamp Photos While-U-Wait," "The Coiner," "The Dollmaker," "The Stamp Fish" (commissioned) and a few others. All of these works are examples of art that I produced in the 1980's, and are not indicative of my current work.
