Peter Cooper Biography
FOOTNOTES
1. Some researchers have "Burke" instead of "Burks"
2. Some researchers have Elizabeth's surname as "Foster" (sources unknown).
3. Also "Isaac." My grandmother, Issac's daughter, spelled her father's name "Issac." Some documents spell it the traditional way, "Isaac." I never saw his signature, so I have no formal documentation of the spelling.
4. Peter Cooper's application was denied for lack of proof. Basically, this means that, though he had been told that he was of Indian blood, he failed to provide proof enough to satisfy the government--specifically, proof that his ancestors were actually enrolled in the Cherokee Nation. There remains a family tradition among the Coopers that Indian blood does run through the Cooper veins. There is a good bit of research pointing to the probability that Peter was right all along, but simply could not document his claim. Donald Panther-Yates and Ronald Martin have done extensive research on the Cooper family Indian connection. I, for one, would like to see poor Pete vindicated by having solid documentation of the Indians in his family. It may actually exist, but I simply don't have access to any large database of microfilms on the Indian rolls to verify the research that others have shared with me.
