Peter Cooper Eastern Cherokee Applications, 1906-1909

FOOTNOTES

1. This is probably an editorial note by Judith Dunn to clarify the name of "Toodelche Carvens." Peter Cooper is known to have had a daughter named "Lou Della," who married Doug Colvin.

2. The word "said" appears twice in Dunn's transcript. This is probably just a typographical error; or, possibly, it could be an error in the original document.

3. Clearly, this should read "1835." It is probably a typographical error in Dunn's transcript.

TRANSCRIPTION NOTE

This transcript of the Peter Cooper Guion-Miller application was originally researched and published by Judith Gail Crabtree Dunn, of Kentucky, in "The Peter Cooper Story," which was co-authored by Norma Jean Crabtree Moore. Southern Muse has reproduced this transcript by permission of Judith Dunn.

Southern Muse had no access to the microfilms of the actual document. This transcript was taken from Mrs. Dunn's published transcript, which was reproduced on a word processor. For that reason, legibility was very clear. Southern Muse has edited to this extent: Mrs. Dunn's document was reproduced in all capital letters. Southern Muse has used upper-and-lower case in order to make the document easier to read. Also, line-breaks will differ from Mrs. Dunn's publication. Otherwise, Southern Muse has attempted to transcribe the document exactly as Mrs. Dunn transcribed it, leaving any misspellings, punctuation, and original editorial notes as they were in Mrs. Dunn's published document, so that her transcript or interpretation of the original is unchanged.

Southern Muse urges family researchers to study the original document or microfilm whenever possible, and to notify us of any term or passage that might have a different interpretation due to poor legibility in the original document. Southern Muse would also appreciate having a carbon copy of the microfilmed document.

Judith Dunn and Norma Jean Moore are descendants of Peter Cooper through his daughter, Nancy Cooper, who married Pink Morgan. Southern Muse would like to thank the authors for sharing all of the Cooper pension documents, and for allowing us to reproduce their transcript of the Guion-Miller application.
