Transcription Notes for pension of William Hedreik (Hedrick, Hedderick).

Transcribed by D.K. Pritchett. This pension document was transcribed from a copy of the handwritten pension document. Handwriting was somewhat difficult and nearly illegible in places. One line, toward the bottom of page two, was apparently left out by the clerk, who then squeezed in the sentence between two other lines. This compression, plus the poor quality of the copy, make it nearly impossible to read. However, it seems to be the standard language that appears in oaths of character references. Other terms in the document seem to be abbreviated with a kind of clerical shorthand (specifically, the name of the court, which is abbreviated as " ~lias."

My copies of the pension were ordered in 1998 from the National Archives. The contact information at that time was: National Archives and Records Administration, Textual Reference Branch (NNR1), 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20408. Phone 202-501-5170 (current 1998).

The National Archives has this pension indexed under the name "William Hedreik." Pension/bounty/land file no.: S4355. Branch of service: army.

The surname of this soldier appears in various forms within the document itself. The clerk was rather arbitrary in his spelling of it. For the convenience of researchers, Southern Muse has transcribed this file under different headings: Hedrick, Hederick, and Hedreik. All three of those spellings appear within the pension files. In addition, Southern Muse has transcribed the file under the surname of Headrick, since many researchers search only that spelling. Please note, however, that the name of the soldier never appears as "Headrick" within the actual pension documents.
