Murray and Whitfield County, Georgia

The counties of Murray and Whitfield are located in the mountains of North Georgia. Murray County is reknowned for its beautiful scenery. The Cohutta Wilderness and Fort Mountain State Park are both located in Murray County. Dalton, a small city in Whitfield County, is known as "The Carpet Capital of the World". Whitfield County is also home to Tunnel Hill, a small town named after its famous antebellum railroad tunnel, which is currently under restoration as a historic site. Southern Muse has selected a few sites that will help the reader get to know this interesting area. The historical society helps preserve historic sites. Prater's Mill is a functional grist mill featured in an annual arts-and-crafts fair. Peacock Alley tells the history of chenille folk tufting, Dalton's cottage tufting industry. The carpet page is simply a very brief introduction to carpet in Dalton, including a few commercial links. Navigating Dalton (Connector Three) is a brief guide to help the first-time visitor to Dalton know where to stay and how to find the carpet-shopping district. These pages are not in-depth guides and are designed for the casual surfer or someone who is thinking of coming to Dalton to buy carpet and doesn't know which part of town to start looking.
