Dalton, Georgia Dalton became a "Preserve America Community" on 28 February 2006. The city was recognized for various preservation efforts, including the restoration of West Hill Chapel, an arts-and-crafts-style stone building located in historic West Hill Cemetery. The city has also worked to preserve Civil War landmarks in Dalton. The Preserve America program both recognizes preservation efforts and encourages communities to revitalize historic landmarks and neighborhoods. The concept behind preservation is that the cultural heritage of a community is part of the community's actual economic worth. Historic preservation helps foster economic growth. Communities that lose sight of this find themselves less competitive in drawing companies that bring jobs. As a community deteriorates, residents abandon the neighborhood and jobs follow suit. According to an article on The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation website, such preservation projects in Georgia "during a five-year period created 7,550 jobs and $201 million in earnings." Education, tourism and economic development are all considered in Preserve America's application process. To find out more about this program, see the Preserve America website. Documentation of Dalton's Preserve America disignation comes from WDEF Channel 12 News (wdef.com, 1 Mar 2006, accessed 4 March 2006) and from the City of Dalton website (accessed 5 Mar 2006). Whitfield County previously became a Preserve America Community in 2004. Documentation for that comes from the Preserve America Website (see article). |
