| Rock Building Fundraisers | Old Rock Building |
Now that Murray County's old rock building has been placed on The National Register of Historic Places, fundraising has begun for its renovation. The building has been in a state of neglect for years. Of immediate concern are necessary structural repairs. Leaks in the roof have already been repaired to stop further damage, but a new roof is badly needed and may cost up to $100,000. The flooring has suffered extensive water damage and the foundation is in need of repair, as well. Various local organizations have pledged support for the renovation project. Among these are the Murray County High School Alumni Association, Whitfield-Murray Historical Society and various graduating classes of Murray County High School. Donations should be mailed directly to the Murray County Board of Education. The Rock Building Committee was formed for the purpose of overseeing fundraising efforts.

Quick Reference: See article, "Fundraisers to start to save rock building" Daily Citizen, Dalton, Georgia: Wednesday, October 12, 2005, page A1, article by Misty Watson. The old rock building is mentioned under North Georgia, Murray County History, at Georgia Magazine (accessed 17 October 2005). The Works Progress Administration connection to the stone building is mentioned in an article on Murray County on-line at New Georgia Encyclopedia. A Google search provided a mention of the National Register Listing, which is fairly new, and has not yet been listed on-line on the National Register of Historic Places, Georgia, web page.
