ROCK BUILDING

Rock Building Restoration Progress & History
Committee Formation, Progress and Initial Phase Planning 2005-2006

Restoration of the old rock building was discussed as early as 1986, but discussions began in earnest about 2004 when the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It took another year to get plans in motion, appoint committees and begin fundraising. Bobby Mosteller and Carlton McDaniel were appointed co-chairs for the committee.

Phase I of the rock building restoration project was to be a new roof, as the old one had badly deteriorated. Interim repairs were made to keep further damage from being done while efforts were being made to raise money for the new roof. Engineers reported that the building was structurally sound and it was okay to move ahead with the restoration. The committee requested the use of inmate labor. The Department of Corrections approved the use of inmate labor. Details of the repairs were discussed and set.

The class of 1954 kicked off the fund-raising efforts by raising over $5,000 toward their goal of $10,000 and proceeded to raise the rest of it, a goal that was achieved quickly. Other classes joined in the effort and several had reached their goal of $10,000 by mid-2006. The Rock Building Committee announced that classes raising at least $10,000 would have a room or suite named in their honor. Donations as of February 16, 2006 totalled over $50,000. Additionally, at least $14,000 had been pledged. The committee began looking for grants that might be available.

The Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce published an article in the Chamber Link. The First National Bank of Chatsworth helped by placing an announcement on their sign to "Save the Rock." The Impact Club and several classes planned fundraisers. Vintage notecards with a sketch of the old rock building were found, reproduced, and made available for sale. This page was updated in July 2006, to serve as a progress summary and history of the rock building renovation. Check the status of renovation efforts and view updates.
